“Slumdog Millionaire is mediocre & trashy" - Priyadarshan
| By Subhash K. Jha, Bollywood Hungama News Network The prolific Priyadarshan is shocked and disgusted by the importance being given to Danny Boyle's desi slum-n-trim saga Slumdog Millionaire. "Slumdog Millionaire is nothing but a cheap trashy mediocre version of those commercial films about estranged brothers and childhood sweethearts that Salim-Javed used to write so brilliantly in the 1970s. And please quote me clearly on this. If the Golden Globe and Oscars committees have chosen to honour this trashy film it just shows their ignorance of world cinema." Priyan whose much-acclaimed film on the silk weavers of Kanjeevaram was shown alongside Boyle's bewildering busty tale at the Toronto Film Festival last year feels we Indians are exercising prideful property rights over a film that denigrates Mumbai. "I saw the film with a mixed audience at the Toronto Film festival. The Westerners loved it. All the Indians hated it. The West loves to see us as a wasteland, filled with horror stories of exploitation and degradation. But is that all there's to our beautiful city of Mumbai?" Priyan is surprised that Mumbai is celebrating a film that shows only the city's underbelly. "Why are we taking this treatment? Just because a whiteman has made Slumdog Millionaire, we’re so happy with it? I've read Vikas Swarup's novel Q & A. It should have been made by Mani Ratnam. Then you'd have seen what he would have done with Mumbai." The angry director wonders why there isn't a single shot in Slumdog that shows the more aesthetic side of Mumbai? "Why has Danny Boyle not taken one shot of Marine Drive? Do his slum dwellers exist only within their slums? And look at the absurdities…A boy becomes a national hero on a game show. One cop takes him under arrest and interrogates him relentlessly. Where is everyone else? Is this kind of confinement possible in this age when television cameras enter your bedroom? If one of our filmmakers had made the same film we would have blasted him out of business." "Let them give as many Oscars as they like. We don't need to be impressed," ends Priyan angrily. Its a well known fact that most Indian people living in India do not care about slum dwellers, because they are too busy exploiting those slum dwellers and their children!!
They live in slums because they are NOT ALLOWED to live within communities which do not include their caste.
Figures--SM is "mediocre" and racist and I daresay, not "real"???????????????
Priyan blah blah blah....Mediocre is what the bulk of Bollywood movies are, lacking artistry or imagination, but always reminding us of a Hollywood movie that came out years before.
Slumdog was about ONE child, growing up parentless, poor, and in a slum (that's right! a slum. Indians need to stop being embarrassed by this, as it is quite global.) It was a BEAUTIFUL movie. Priyan and other ignorant, egotistical people are not able to see what most people see. It is not the slum, or the Hindu-Muslim violence, or how children are exploited (all of which are TRUE by the way) that stays with people. It is about the characters--how rich with life and love they are. It shows humanity. It reminds us of all that we have yet complain over.
Western audiences got this movie much better than many Indians in India ever could. That is because the movie requires one to feel, to empathize, to see something that is so not fair. When some people here talk about the movie, it is with a warm smile and appreciation, a fondness for the characters, and a solid perspective about the story being told.
Meanwhile, in India, some high-profile and well to do people are too worried about how the movie makes "their" India look. Well, for many Westerners, this movie makes people feel for others who have such hard and indescribable challenges in life.
slumdog isn't supposed to be about the "beauty of Mumbai". Priyadarshan just exposes his ignorance about movie-making and its no wonder that all his movies are terrible.
He is just jealous and thats why his only excuse is to use the "racist card". Most Bollywood movies have dumb sets where all the heros and heroines are so u unrealistic and then they fly off to some other place to sing some dumb song and wear dumb outfits...........and they can't act!!
Whats there for priyadarshan to make a judgment on this film??
am a student of viscom...n there is a lot to learn n understand from the making of this movie Slum dog Millionaire...
A period where viewers watched his malayalam movies like Kakakoyil and Vettom has expired..Today viewers want a reality movie like dis,,instead of some cheap comedy's...
Ajith
look who is telling all this?? He is calling the movie a mediocre version of old films.then what was he doing in bollywood all this years. Simply copying all the hit malayalam movies without any changes and filling his pocket. Frankly is he expecting the oscar commitee to give best movie to his pirated versions?
And dear priyadarshan let me tell u one thing if u dont know anything about movies. In a good movie usually it shows only things that are relevant to the plot of the movie. Thats why the posh areas in Mumbai is not shown. Not that they are trying to show there is no good places in Mumbai. I've seen in many of ur movies that hero and heroine are living in a small town but when a song comes they gets teleported to London,Malasia etc. why u went to the foreign countries?? was there no good places for u to shoot inside India???
in future please make comments only if u have the right to do so........
I realize the beauty of Mumbai. I appreciate a really good film. I live for diversity among all races and religions. I am an American. I loved this film, not because I believe all of India is awash in poverty and the caste system. I enjoyed the film because it told a story of a boy who experiences life. The hardships, the downfalls, the scary times and the joyous times. I didn't watch this film thinking how horrible India was. The only thought that entered my mind is...."Why are they making such a big deal about this film and not "Om Shanti Om"?"
Please, realize that "America" is not all "Americans". I am not self absorbed nor ignorant of other countries. I feel you jumped to conclusions and that is just as bad as assuming India is full of slumdogs.
I am so disgusted with his comment. I have seen many of his stupid comadies and he dares to talk about Slumdog? If story does not demand showing how beautiful Bombay is then Danny can't adjust his movie for sake of it.
Slumdog belongs to slums and Danny Boyle is a racist sucker
